Muscle Activation Techniques
Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) was developed over 15 years ago by Greg Roskopf, and it has been used primarily in the U.S. by professional sports teams such as the Denver Broncos (football) and the Denver Nuggets (basketball).
MAT uses range of motion assessments that cover every joint in the body. Its practitioners are equipped with over 190 muscle test to help customize treatment to your weakest muscles or positional instabilities.
How Can Muscle Activation Techniques Help Me?

The Objectives and Effectiveness of MAT
MAT is an effective tool in increasing a person’s function by activating muscles and producing stable and necessary motion at each joint undergoing treatment. There are specific muscle tests and range of motion assessments that are performed, followed by palpation or massage at both ends of the affected muscle.
The end result of a successful treatment at Apana Bodywork is:
- Greater muscle strength
- Increase range of motion
- Decrease/eliminate pain and inflammation
Generally, our goal is to first determine what you cannot do, then help you do that with ease by continually assessing and treating all of the muscles that will help overcome that limitation. Although treatments can range in terms of overall success rate, an increase in range of motion and strength can be achieved and maintained within a single session.
Clients generally leave feeling stronger and more balanced. One particularly active client reported a feeling of “everything working together as it should” when he returned to the tennis courts.
Qi Gong
We utilize Qi Gong as an add-on to deepen the effectiveness of our services and to help clear blockages and allow healing on all levels. We use movements and techniques that can stimulate/accelerate healing when simple physical approaches are not yielding the expected results. Clients can go home with a few movements to practice and allow the flow of Qi to resume and create health and balance.
